Afro-Caribbean Salsa & Movement gives students enhanced awareness of their bodies that enables greater movement and creativity. The strengthened freedom in the music makes salsa fun, exciting, and sensual whether dancing alone or with a partner. Learn elements of rumba and Cuban folkloric as well as contemporary Caribbean and Afro-Caribbean movements. This enthralling course not only provides innovative, rhythmic technique, but also offers the perfect full-body workout.

Objectives

Afro-Caribbean Salsa Musicality & Movement Basics

  1. Knowledge of the body and enhanced musicality
  2. A solid foundation in salsa, allowing students to create their own distinct styles
  3. Able to dance solo or with a partner
  4. Knowledge of body abilities and possibilities (kinesiology and anatomy)

Afro-Caribbean Salsa Solo and Partner Work

  1. Knowledge of body possibilities to move in space and time (choreology)
  2. Increased freedom in the music

Afro-Caribbean Salsa, Rumba, Movement, Combinations

  1. Knowledge of improvisation and composition
  2. Knowledge of dance techniques that enhance bodily perception, performance and creativity

Rationale

Afro-Caribbean Salsa & Movement allows students to access an underrepresented archive of performance, movement, and dance. Differing from its ballroom counter-part, Afro-Caribbean salsa extensively incorporates African Diasporic movement from West Africa, Americas and Caribbean. This course allows students to learn of the varied mix of cultures and cosmologies that not only make up salsa, but Latin America in general.
